Setúbal is just 30Km (19 miles) away from Lisbon and it is one of our favorite destinations as a day trip from the city. The city’s location is stunning, just by the estuary of the Sado river and neighboring the wilderness of Arrábida Natural Park, which awakens our most adventurous side. This city is also where one of Portugal’s busiest fresh food markets is located, showcasing the intrinsic relationship that setubalenses have always had with the sea and with fishing as a way of making a living.

a man holding a box of foodBegin your day leaving Lisbon at sunrise, driving along the Tagus toward Setúbal as the landscape shifts from cork forests to the salty breeze of the estuary.

1. Mercado do Livramento – The Heart of Setúbal
Arrive as the market comes alive: vendors calling out the day’s catch, grandmothers inspecting tomatoes, and fishermen arranging gleaming seafood on ice. With your local guide, explore vibrant stalls, taste Azeitão cheese, fresh bread with local olive oil, and seasonal fruits. Learn how to choose the best fish and hear stories that reveal the deep cultural roots of Setúbal’s food traditions.

2. The Fish Port – Where Tradition Meets the Sea
A short drive brings you to Setúbal’s working port. Walk the docks as fishermen unload their boats, the air rich with salt and sea. Your guide explains traditional fishing methods, the rhythms of the Sado estuary, and the community’s long relationship with the Atlantic. This is the authentic, living source of the region’s seafood heritage.

3. Exclusive Umami & Garum-Inspired Meal
End your journey with an intimate, chef-led tasting inspired by the renowned Umami & Garum seafood experience. Enjoy a progression of small bites and a refined multi-course menu celebrating fish preservation, aging techniques, and modern interpretations of ancient Roman garum. Each dish is paired with local wines and narrated by your guide and chef, turning the meal into a sensory voyage through Portugal’s most ancient flavours.

A full-day cultural immersion where land, sea, and tradition blend into one unforgettable gastronomic adventure.

A definite must in Pico

Silvia gave us a thorough history of how grapes came to be on the island. We were taken on a walk through the wine fields but mind you these wine fields are not like ours in the States, these grapes are grown in lava beds. No soil! And boy, oh boy the wine produced from these grapes is fanatastic!!! Silvia then took us to a protected swimming area to either swim or not and eat small bites at the local restaurant right there. Crabs, limpets and favas beans with bread. Lastly we were driven to a winery to sample wines produced by a women, very passionate about her wines. And fabulous wines they are!!! If you only have a few hours on Pico, as we did, I would highly recommend this tour. The ferry ride from Faial was a breeze.

Incredible experience!

An increadible experience! The place is incredible, with exuberant nature. It's difficult to choose the best part: the walks, the wine tests, the contact with the local culture, the swimming pools... Silvia, many thanks for the fantastic experience! We all came back delighted :)

A day well spent in BEAUTIFUL and UNIQUE Pico Island

As a solo female traveler, I have to say that, I absolutely loved (LOVED ;-) this experience. It is not only a great way to dive into the Azorean Culture through tastings of the VERY UNIQUE Pico wine, sampling of a good bit of tasty local snacks, breathtaking walks through the vineyards, swimming in tide pools within the amazing volcanic landscape, but also an absolute perfect way to meet and mingle with other fellow visitors and local hosts. I wish I could stay longer in order to take full advantage of all the tasteful and careful recommendations that Silvia provided while leisurely taking us all into this beautiful journey into Pico island life style. Thank YOU so much for such a blissful day, Silvia ... I hope to come back and do this all over again with a special someone ... who knows! Hugs to all of you who took such great care of us during our tour.

The best wine tour ever

A day well spent that made all the difference on our trip to Pico! We got to know places, wines and tasted local 'tapas' that without Silvia and Adriana would not have been possible or would have been extremely difficult! They took us swimming at an incredible place and even lent us a snorkelling mask. Because the weather allowed, we had a delicious volcanic wine tasting from a local wine producer among the black rocks and kiwis and with snacks accompanied by local people! A trip not to be missed with people who in a few hours become friends and that we carry in our hearts! Thank you so much!

Do this once you arrive in Pico!

This tour should be the first thing you do when you arrive in Pico! The food and wine tastings were amazing, and Silvia was a wealth of knowledge. She provided great history on the island of Pico, its winemaking tradition, and was happy to provide recommendations for other food, activities, and travel.

Silvia put a wonderful day together for us that included learning about Pico Island's history and it's unique character. She also managed to keep it interesting and fun enough for our 9 and 11 year olds. The winery we went to was had some really great wines and the lunch spot she picked was so good we went back the next night! Overall, a really great experience that I would highly recommend. It was so good we intend on using her company for our upcoming visit to Lisbon.

Beautiful tour with Silvia, nice locations, great food and great wine. Silvia is the perfect host for this activity as she has a deep knowledge and much to tell about the locations, locals, local specialties and everything else that needs to be discussed. 😀
