GENERAL QUESTIONS
-
Regarding Lisbon food tours we, and previous guests as well, recommend booking those tours for the beginning of your stay, especially if it’s your first time in Portugal.
During our walking tours, we’ll provide you with tons of information not only about the districts we walk through but also the surrounding areas and share with you some secret places to visit not far from where you are.
Many of our guests go back to the neighborhoods we visit on their own to eat at their favorite tour spot or to discover new places we suggest. If the beginning of your trip is all booked up, then end your visit on a high note and take our tour on your last night.
Our countryside tours make the perfect day trip from Lisbon. Escape the city and open yourself to a new perspective of the country, culture, and gastronomy from Portugal.
-
Of course! Our experiences are mostly constituted by mixed groups. We must say that these experiences can be the best option for you! Apart from discovering Portuguese cuisine, the culture, the history, and the architecture you will know some locals and other travelers during these experiences.
Because our experiences are three and a half hours in length, we have time for everything. Namely to respect the pace of every element in the group and to make real connections.
Although it is not one of our goals, (because you can’t control that) thankfully, we still need time for unpredictable things in our lives and several guests who were strangers in the beginning of our tours became friends, or just met for another walk or dinner in Lisbon later on.
-
In order to keep our prices competitive, we require a minimum group size of 2-3 guests in order to operate our tours. This is for several reasons, namely the diversity and the quantity of food we serve, but also costs.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, this situation never happened, but presently, with fewer people booking, single bookings have increased and we are addressing them on a case by case basis. -
All our tours and experiences promote inclusion and welcome diversity, which includes sexual and gender diversity (LGBTQ2S+).
Our team is the personification of this, with members with very different social and cultural backgrounds, different sexual orientations, different paths, all gathered by the four same passions: Lisbon, food, traveling, and sharing and connecting equally.
We’re also part of the LGBTQ2S+ community in Lisbon, each one differently, so we can easily give you any specific information you need about the Lisbon gay area and many other friendly LGBTQ2S+ tips.
-
We operate tours in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, and Japanese. Please check our availability calendar for more details.

Absolutely! One of our concerns is to ‘charm’ you with curiosity. We can provide several gastronomical addresses and places to explore in the city and surroundings on your own and according to your personal interests and tastes.
Our team is active and engaged in the city’s cultural, gastronomical, and leisure lifestyle so you will always get the best tips for the moment that you are traveling in. Tips for secret spots that even locals and residents hardly know included!
-
Absolutely! When I design Oh! My Cod experiences, I‘m always putting myself on the side of the guest, asking, would I take this particular tour? Only the tours I would love to do are then launched.
I’m a resident, born and raised in Lisbon, that has been exploring Portugal for more than 30 years (yes, we do get older!). Our experiences can not be considered classical touristy itineraries or tours. They are the types of experiences I’ve had with friends and then I open them up to guests from around the world. So yes! If you are an expat or a local born in Portugal, you will enjoy it a lot!
One of my main concerns in our tours is to go deep into several subjects (food, culture, architecture, but also social and history. Everything is intertwined and we’ll discuss anything in a relaxed and fun way, connecting with each other and learning from both sides.
Apart from this, we have a healthy obsession with Portugal’s hidden gems, either in the city or out in the countryside. So, if you feel the same, these tours are for you! -
Yes, we can. All Oh! My Cod experiences can be hosted as a private group. If you wish to celebrate a special moment with your friends, colleagues or family members this is a great way to do so!
We can also tailor your own private tour according to your special tastes or food restrictions, bearing in mind that fun and food culture will always be present!
From corporate group food tours to team building events or incentive tours to personal celebrations, wedding anniversaries, and foodie groups our cocktail is a combination of interaction, information, fun and of course great local Portuguese cuisine.
-
Yes, bathrooms are available at selected food-tasting locations.
-
We take good care of you, so our experience always implies some logistics (predict the tastings, partners to organise our table in all the food spots, adapt the experience to food allergies, etc.). Besides that our food tours tend to sell out. For these reasons we do not take walk ups.
-
We do get some rain and wind in Lisbon, sometimes even some snow in central Portugal, but we’ve always operated our Lisbon food tours rain or shine! (Hint: we haven’t cancelled a single tour due to bad weather since the day we started back in 2016!)
We believe that rain nor wind will blow away your curiosity and your foodie desire to indulge in Portuguese cuisine and culture. Besides what could be better than enjoying a hot traditional portuguese dish in a cozy ‘taverna’ with some good company?
We ask you to check the weather beforehand and to please dress appropriately. In case of rain, the tastings will occur indoors but an umbrella will be required when we are walking from one stop to another.
Also please be mindful of your shoes. The infamous Calçada Portuguesa ( Portuguese pavement or Portuguese sidewalks) are very slippery when wet.
-
In Lisbon we can easily reach temperatures of more than 37ºC (98ºF) in July and August, which can make walking in the city unpleasant for some. To overcome this situation we also host sunset and nightfall food tours starting at 18h (6pm) for guests who wish to avoid hot temperatures or to have a different experience that combines, day and night.
Plus this will give us the opportunity to provide you with some great local tips on what to do in Lisbon to beat the heat, namely our Lisbon boat tour: eat, drink and sail with a Chef, but also other free activities.
-
Yes you will. You’ll just need to provide proof that you are unable to travel or have been advised not to travel for medical reasons. Some services fees may apply. Alternatively we are happy to issue you a voucher that is valid for 2 years.
-
All tours are fully refundable three weeks before the scheduled date of departure. One week before 50% refundable and less than one week your tour is 100% non-refundable. No shows are also 100% non-refundable. All our activities run regardless of weather conditions.
FOOD TOUR SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
-
Of course! At each stop you’ll have different types of non-alcoholic drinks to choose from like lemonades, natural juices, water, and even my favourite childhood juice.
Portugal has a huge diversity of wine that we are very proud of and want to show you by doing a sort of Lisbon wine tour included in our gastronomic tours, we do not neglect non-alcoholic beverages.Apart from the experiences exclusively dedicated to wine tasting (day trips from Lisbon to visit wineries near Lisbon, or a wine tasting experience in the city, you will feel comfortable and satisfied with the alternative options we offer.
-
No, there is no discount. We provide non-alcoholic beverage options wherever we go, and those also have costs. And in some cases, they are more expensive than the alcoholic option so we neither charge you more or offer a discount if you don’t drink alcohol.
-
No. During our experience, we do not taste the Pastel de Nata (or Portuguese Custard Tart) because we don’t think you ‘need’ us to show you this Portuguese dessert. To say it shortly you pay us to show you hidden treasures and the Pastel de Nata is no secret.
You know about it, you are looking for it, you saw it on tv shows and read about it in travel guides. So a better use of our guidance and tastings, is to show you the lesser known desserts, just as good as a Pastel de Nata. Portugal is known for ‘conventual’ sweets, made essentially of egg yolks and sugar, and the Pastel de Nata is just one amongst 100+ different desserts.
Of course, you’ll get our favorite two addresses to taste a Pastel de Nata at, among other suggestions which are located right in the busiest central part of Lisbon so you can go on your own easily!
-
Babies are always welcomed and children 2 years and under do not pay.
We’ve only had good experiences with parents carrying their babies. If you’re doing a walking food tour in Lisbon, expect to be walking on cobblestone streets, uphill and downhill, and to encounter a few flights of stairs.Instead of a stroller, we recommend that you use a carrier so that your hands are free. That said some families do prefer strollers and we still had a great time! With some patience and helping hands, things can go smoothly, even with cobblestones.
Regarding children and teenagers, we think this depends on the personality and how much they love food, want to discover the city and have patience to listen to stories. Our hosts are sensitive enough to adapt their content to include children of different ages.
We suggest you use your judgement to determine if the tour is appropriate for them.
If your child doesn’t enjoy food or if they don’t want to be ‘obliged’ to relate to strangers in a mixed group environment than perhaps a private group would be a better option. Contact us for more details.
-
All children 2 years of age or older must pay.
They are served the exact same portion of food as all other guests (except for alcohol of course). They have their own place with us at the table, their own food and then they can decide what they want to taste, eat and experience, just like any other guest.
We want everyone to feel included in our food tours and this includes children as well. I can tell you that this works and it makes a huge difference! Also, our tour lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes so even ‘small stomachs’ can keep up with adults.
-
Yes, you will need to pay for the food experience. We want everyone present to participate and share in this experience as it is an essential piece of the group dynamics and we don’t want anyone to be excluded.
If you’re concerned about food restrictions and allergies, please let us know in advance so we can try to adapt the tastings. This is not a problem at all.
-
We have designed our food tours to be accessible to people of all ages and to most mobility levels. Please bear in mind that Lisbon is a medieval city, full of cobblestones, narrow passages and hills. This is also a part of its beauty and uniqueness.
In total we walk approximately 2.5km (miles), with some uphill sections walked at a leisurely pace over the course of 3.5 hours.
During the tour, we have 5 stops and at each stop everyone will have the opportunity to sit down and rest while eating. And as a rule, we naturally set the pace to accommodate the slowest guest. Here is a detailed breakdown of the walking route:
- Walk 15 minutes in a straight line crossing the Baixa neighborhood from the start point at Praça do Comércio to the 1st gastronomic stop. Visit for 20 minutes.
- Then a 20 minute walk in a straight line with a 2 minute climb to our 2nd stop in the Mouraria neighborhood. Visit for 30 minutes.
- Then we’ll walk for 10 minutes, where we’ll need to go down some stairs to our 3rd stop. Visit for 30 minutes.
- Then we walk between 20 to 30 minutes to the Alfama neighborhood with no more uphill climbs! We’ll go straight and then downhill for a bit to our 4th stop. Visit for 30-40 minutes.
- Our final stop is 2 mins away on flat terrain.
If you have mobility issues please let us know in advance by contacting us here. We can also customize an itinerary for you, reduce the walking time or agree to use alternative modes of transportation between the individual stops if you are travelling with someone that can assist you during these short periods. We want to help to realise your wishes and to feel comfortable.
-
Unfortunately this tour is not suitable for wheelchairs. If you are travelling with someone who can assist you, we will happily guide you both on a private tour set at your own pace. It will not be easy, but it can be an incredibly unforgettable experience with the right guidance and some patience.
-
In general, our experiences can accommodate vegetarians, gluten-free foodies, lactose intolerants, pescatarians, keto-diet, and pescatarians. At this time only our Lisbon boat tours can be adapted to vegans and hallal travelers.
