Discover the history and the taste of a unique volcanic, mineral & salty wine, unique in the world while immersing in the local culture, people andโ€ฆ nature!

With a dash of adventure in an incredible natural setting, we will unveil a secret unknown for many: the unique volcanic Pico wines, and the people who make it all possible. Intertwined with the local communities we curate encounters and tastings you wouldnโ€™t otherwise be able to live.

We meet in Madalena, to begin our experience with a short walk, through the vineyards right by the sea, at the foothills of Pico Mountain, in the landscape of Pico Wine – considered since 2004 a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This heroic wine comes from vines that grow from lava soil and flourish on the rock. All the work is done manually and none of this has changed in 500 years, when the first settlers introduced grape growing in Pico.

To refresh our feet, we take you to one of our favorite natural swimming pools, in an amazing setting, where you can get on the water or just lay down for a bit, exchanging more local stories and preparing your appetite for the next stop where, depending on the weather we can be outdoors tasting local crabs, and other local delicacies or indoors with a more earthy local meal.

Finally, we take to a wine tasting in a beautiful setting with an emergent and promising independent local producer. You will experience all the landscape and history in your mouth!

None of our tastings are done at the Pico Cooperative (Madalena) where you can go on your own for organized tastings. We value their work, especially because they have allowed Pico Wine to be reborn, since 1949, but we want to take you to places where you would hardly go alone. We want to create the bridge between you and local wine producers who are at the forefront of this landscape and sustainable revolution while tasting low-intervention and limited editions of Pico Wine.

Pico is an example of how farming techniques and practices can be adapted to a secluded and challenging environment. In addition, visiting an old Taverna and an independent local Wine Producer offers the possibility to authentically live and experience Pico’s local contemporary culture.

MEETING POINT

On the tour day, you will meet the group near the Ferry Boat terminal in Madalena Village, Pico Island. The exact meeting point is a small statue of Gilberto Mariano da Silva.

As a reference, just in front, you will find a small water sports shop, in blue turquoise, named CW Azores. We will meet, across the street right in front of CW Azores where you will find the statue.

It’s a very central area so I think you will not have any problem finding it, but feel free to contact us if you need before the experience starts.

A definite must in Pico

Silvia gave us a thorough history of how grapes came to be on the island. We were taken on a walk through the wine fields but mind you these wine fields are not like ours in the States, these grapes are grown in lava beds. No soil! And boy, oh boy the wine produced from these grapes is fanatastic!!! Silvia then took us to a protected swimming area to either swim or not and eat small bites at the local restaurant right there. Crabs, limpets and favas beans with bread. Lastly we were driven to a winery to sample wines produced by a women, very passionate about her wines. And fabulous wines they are!!! If you only have a few hours on Pico, as we did, I would highly recommend this tour. The ferry ride from Faial was a breeze.

A day well spent in BEAUTIFUL and UNIQUE Pico Island

As a solo female traveler, I have to say that, I absolutely loved (LOVED ;-) this experience. It is not only a great way to dive into the Azorean Culture through tastings of the VERY UNIQUE Pico wine, sampling of a good bit of tasty local snacks, breathtaking walks through the vineyards, swimming in tide pools within the amazing volcanic landscape, but also an absolute perfect way to meet and mingle with other fellow visitors and local hosts. I wish I could stay longer in order to take full advantage of all the tasteful and careful recommendations that Silvia provided while leisurely taking us all into this beautiful journey into Pico island life style. Thank YOU so much for such a blissful day, Silvia ... I hope to come back and do this all over again with a special someone ... who knows! Hugs to all of you who took such great care of us during our tour.

The best wine tour ever

A day well spent that made all the difference on our trip to Pico! We got to know places, wines and tasted local 'tapas' that without Silvia and Adriana would not have been possible or would have been extremely difficult! They took us swimming at an incredible place and even lent us a snorkelling mask. Because the weather allowed, we had a delicious volcanic wine tasting from a local wine producer among the black rocks and kiwis and with snacks accompanied by local people! A trip not to be missed with people who in a few hours become friends and that we carry in our hearts! Thank you so much!
